After Siena

In winter 2025, the Metropolitan Museum of New York held a massive exhibit of Sienese art from the 13th – 15th century, much of which had never traveled to this country. It was a powerful show, which has influenced my current work.
A feature of Sienese painting is the presence of small panels beneath the main scene, called predellas or predella. They were additional stories to amplify the main story shown above. Adopting this idea, I create three small canvasses above the main one, extending the visual conversation. Of course, my subject matter is not Christian iconography but meditative abstraction. I call them composite paintings. It is not lost on me that 3 over 1 has beautiful mathematical and philosophical overtones.
